Mrs. McGillicuddy witnesses a murder in the train she took when she was going to stay for a few days at Miss Marple. She sees the victim in the face but the killer only from the back. The conductor and stationmaster are informed, but they consider it as a figment of one's imagination. Miss Marple however informs the police force. No body is found. She discovers a spot where the body can be dumped, a big country estate where the train passes. An acquaintance of her knows to get a job in the estate and gets instructions where and what she must look for. The spot is found, but the body a bit later. Meanwhile strange incidents happen at the estate, which causes a lot of work for the police force. But it is miss Marple that brings the solution, after she returns from Ceylon after visiting a friend.
