Herbert I. McDonough (Nicolas Cage), known as HI and Edwina (Holly Hunter) form an unusual couple. HI is an incorrigible petty thief, Ed a former police woman on whom HI felt in love during his imprisonment. But when Ed hears that she never can get children, the duo plants a robbery. They will steal one baby from a rich furniture giant, who was blessed with quints. The entire kidnapping does not go the way they wanted and moreover, the young couple has no experience with babies. And then there still are the escaped ex-buddies Gale and Evelle who one evening stands at his door...
