In the 12th century the humble French blacksmith Balian (Orlando Bloom) has just lost his wife and child, when he meets knight Godfrey of Ibelin (Liam Neeson), who tells him that he is his father. Godfrey asks Balian to go with him on crusade to Jerusalem, to fight in the long bloody war for the Holy Land. As a stranger in strange surroundings, he has to serve a damned King, basks a forbidden love for an exotic queen and gets raised to the knighthood. In an attempt to keep the fragile peace, Balian of Ibelin eventually must try to protect the people of Jerusalem against a very powerful enemy.
