Gazillion Movies Review :
1911. The farmer Charles Saganne (Gérard Depardieu) takes voluntarily service at the French army and is sent to the Sahara. There he serves under the aristocratic colonel Dubreuilh. Already rapidly he distinguishes himself and enforces the respect at both his colleague soldiers and at the Arabs. He is sent to Paris for a diplomatic mission, which pitifully failed. Back in the Sahara he leads the campaign against sultan Omar. He acquires celebrity and military honor, but heroic deeds and idealism prove to be less suitable for the trenches of WO I.
