Helen (Sigourney Weaver) is a psychiatrist and specialised in the behaviour of serial killers. Once she escaped an assassination attack, which gave her a trauma. Now a serial killer is on the move again. They discover it is a copycat: the killer imitates well-known psychopaths whose fame he pursues. Inspector Mary Jane (Holly Hunter)calls in the help of Helen. But when the killer is closed in, Helen is taken hostage and she has to overcome her fears.
