Lt. John Dunbar is given hero status when he by accident leads the forces of the Union to victory in the American Civil War. He asks to get a position in the West, but finds a deserted place. Pretty quickly he finds out that he is not alone: he meets a wolf and an Indian tribe. He gets friendly with the Indians, and meets a white woman who grew up with the Indians.
