Movie Plot : The Japanese rural fisherman Gou-ichi Takada one day is urgently requested to come to Tokyo by his daughter-in-law Rie. His son Kenichi, whom he has not seen for already ten years, is admitted in the hospital with liver cancer. Rie sees this event as a way to bring father and son in contact with each other again. Kenichi however doesn’t want to know anything about reconciliation. Before Gou-ichi is going back to the countryside, Rie gives him a videocassette. Once Gou-ichi comes home examines the videocassette, which is made by his son in the Southern Chinese province Yunnan as part of a research project concerning Chinese folk art. On the videocassette, there is a failed attempt of Kenichi to seduce the best singer from the region to bring the traditional light opera song "Riding Alone for Thousands or Miles" to hearing. The singer Li Jiamin claims to be struck by heavy influenza as a result of which he cannot sing. He promises Kenichi however that he can film him at his next visit. Touched by the fact that his bedridden son probably never returns to Yunnan, Gou-ichi decides to go to China to tape Li's act himself, this in spite of the fact that he doesn’t speak Mandarin and has no knowledge of Chinese music.

Movie Plot : Lord Asano pays for his crime, the killing of Karu (Rie Miyazawa), by committing suicide. His subordinate Oishi (Ken Takakura) is convinced that this was a plot of Karu. He gathers 46 samurai to take revenge on Karu. Exactly one year after the death of Asano, the 47 samurai leave their loved ones and assail the castle of Karu.
