Movie Plot : Tessa Quayle is found dead in a car at the bank of the Turkana Lake in Kenya. Her throat has been cut through. Beside her lies the driver, decapitated. Tessa's traveling companion, the African doctor Arnold Bluhm, is nowhere to be found. Justin, Tessa's much older husband and British diplomat on the embassy in Nairobi, undertakes deeply disillusioned a search for the killers and for the real facts of the death of his wife.

Movie Plot : Sunday 30 January 1972, Derry, Northern Ireland. Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt) organizes a non-violent march for equal rights between Catholics and Protestants. He is definitely intending to exclude all violence between the different parties. But in spite of his consultation with the Unionist authorities and his attempts to negotiate with the British Order Forces the demonstration gets out of hand: thirteen people are shot by the army. Since that day January 30th is known as "Bloody Sunday". A date, which also meant the start of the civil war in Northern Ireland.

Movie Plot : Michael Lynch (Kevin Spacey), a talented robber, is the most notorious criminal in Dublin. He behaves like a modern Robin Hood: he only robs the rich but prefers to live between the poor, assisted by his two women, his children and his gang. Whenever it is possible, Michael disturbs the public order and makes the police and other criminals look like a fool with his spectacular hold-ups. As his popularity increases among the people, the frustration grows at the police force because they cannot catch him. Especially Noel Quigley (Stephen Dillane) makes it his point of honour to make Michael Lynch change his tune.

Movie Plot : Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis) wasn’t politically active in Northern Ireland, but because of his wanderings through the city, he is suspected of being a member of the IRA. For security reasons, his father sends him to London, where he is on October 5th, 1974 when a bombing takes place. A hippie reports him and his friends as possible offenders. They are tortured without officially being charged, because now this is possible because of the new anti-terrorism law, and they become a scapegoat for the British-Irish issue.
