Movie Plot : The young girl Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) lives in Oxford in a parallel universe. Here the souls of deceased people are visible as animals which take another form each time. One day she hears her father discussion about a new physical element: Dust. This element has the power to unite worlds, as a result of which it is both hated and coveted by several parties, among which the church. Lyra undertakes a journey to the element, and must fight with demons, spirits and other creatures, only having a magical compass.

Movie Plot : Around 1660 Edward 'Ned' Kynaston is the most celebrated actress of the United Kingdom. It is, as it happens, forbidden for women to perform on stage. Ned makes profit out of this by using his beauty and because he can give a convincing rendition of female roles. King Charles II is tired of seeing each time again the same artists in the same tragedies. Because nobody takes his suggestions to brighten "Othello" up with a couple of good joke seriously, the King decides to make the royal plays more interesting by letting real women play in it. This is good news for the brutal mistress of the King. For Ned however this news hits him hard. From one day to the next he is of no importance again until the rising star Maria decides to make a man out of Ned again.
