Movie Plot : The movie is about the period between 1846 and 1863 in New York's 'five point', at that time the most violent place in the world. The Irish immigrants who enter New York cause different conflicts with the originally citizens. Amsterdam Vallon, the son of one of those immigrants, is out for revenge after the killing of his father.

Movie Plot : New York 1870. Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is engaged with May Welland (Winona Ryder), an engagement according to the book. But when he meets May's niece, Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), he falls in love with her. She is notable because of her unconventional attitude; she is divorced and for this reason is kept out of the social life of the high society in that time.
